Slave morality is
essentially valuation of actions based on consequences to the valuation of
actions based on intention. The salve morality is a reaction to oppression;
therefore it can be characterized by pessimism and cynicism. Slave morality
does not seek to transcend the masters, but to make them salves as well. I find this kind of practice occurs today.
Between females particularly, when there is a girl in the group that gets too
popular and has an inflated ego and power, the other girls instead of trying to
rise to her level, will try to tear her down. It also happens in the work world
when someone gets too successful the other employees will attempt to make that
person look bad and get him or her demoted. Our society is dramatically
competitive but in many cases instead of trying to rise to the other persons
level we just want to bring them down to our level. Is this human nature or a
product of our culture? For slave mortality, the good is what is most useful
for the whole community, not the strong. The powerful are few in numbers
compared to the masses of weak. I find this to be very political. It reminds me
of the media framing a political story a certain way and then by distributing
and printing the story, all of a sudden the masses of people who at one point
maybe weren’t aware of a story now hold the power. Do you all think that some
of slave morality is still present today? Is that a good thing or not?
I think that slave morality will always exist in humanity. It is in our nature to dislike being weaker than others, and in the case we are weak, we do not have the strength to rise up to power. We then do what we can and use 'slave intelligence' and cleverness to try and tear down those in power so we seem less feeble, even though our net amount of power remains unchanged. To whether this is good or bad, I believe that it all depends on the situation and the goals of the powerful that the slaves wish to bring down. To use an infamous Hitler example, bringing him down and out of power was obviously a very good thing. However if a leader is fair and peaceful, bringing them down just to create the illusion of slaves gaining power would be harmful for the entire community, both the strong and the weak.

ReplyDeleteI definately think that the slave mentality still exists today. When people see that somebody is more succesful than others and starting to rise to the top, people instantly start to dislike them or try to take them down. I think that this has partly to do with the fact that it is easier to try and take somebody down than to build yourself up. But also people just always think like the lambs. If the birds of prey are hurting the lambs, then they obviously think that the birds of prey are evil, even though they are just doing what they were born to do. When somebody comes around and is naturally better than everyone else, people are going to not like that person for being so good, but it is just what they were born to do. They're not evil for being successful at what they do, the slave mentality just causes people to think like that.
